. In
some degree, in her opinion, she turned to be a poverty of
Rochester. Then she would lose her dignity which Was most appreciated
by her. If Rochester couldn t treat her equally, she
couldn t stay with him any longer. She retorted excitedly: “Do
you think I can stay to be come nothing to you? Do you think I aiR
an automation?——a ma chi ne without feelings? And can bear to
have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of
living water dashed from my cup? Do you 曲nk. because I’m
poor, obscure, plain an d little, I gin soulless and heartless? You
岫nk wrong!一I have as much soul as you. as full as much
heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty, and much
wealth, I should have ma de it as hard for you to lcave me,as it
is now for me to leave you. I’m not talking to you now though
the mediuln of customs conventionalities. nor even of mortal
flesh:一it is my spirit that addresses your spirit;just as if both
had passed through the grave, and we stood at God s feet, equal,
一as we are!硼》These words expressed complete1y Jan e s rebe1.
1ious spirit. She thought she was equal to Rochester.Jane made
the strongest voice of revolt as an independent huma n. Jane in—
sisted on her o~ntl outlo k on life, defending human dignity, an d
protecting her feelings from being violated.Jane would rather aban
doned comfortable life at Thomfield than lose independence.
At last, when Jane decided to ma rry Rochester, she refused extravagance.
Luxurious clothes and jewelry were meaningless for
her. She Wash t “a Jew—usurer, seeking good investment in
lan d.’’@ What Jane needed was a happy family and a man wh。
gave his confidence an d treated her equally.
The fate often made fun of Jane. On the wedding between
Jane and Rochester. Jan e was told that Rochester had married
before. Bertha Mason, a mad woman was his wife who had been
living at a loom at Th omfield. At the bad news,Jane was very
reaso nab le. Th ough every feeling revolted against leaving
Rochester, Mr. Roc hester wanted her not to go and live with
him,she still made a decision to leave. She knew if she agreed
with Rochester, she woul d fell into the category of mistress and
lost her respect. The dream of freedom, happiness and the in—
dependence which she was looking forward to were fancies. Being
a mistress was a tragedy. The strength of reason was power over
emotion.Jane left Thornfield resolutely to meet unknown fate in
the foture.
T0 get dignity, freedom and independence, Jane had
roamed for two days. She almost starved to death. Luckily, St
John helped her.Jane was arranged to be with St John s sisters.
Jane won the sisters love because Jane was so firm, kind and in—
telligent. But Jane didn t want to depend on her cousins for liv—
ing,she accepted the job offered by St John, acting as a teacher
in a village schoo1. Jane gained social respect because of her
hardworking. Thus, she was self—sufficient and entirely relied
on herself Her independent and rebellious characters were further deepe ned.
Jane s spirits of revolt was obviously expressed by her re.
fusal 0f St John S ofer of marriage.Jan e never cha nged her will
to folow St John. She thought,“If I join St John,I abandon half
myself, if I go to India. I go to prema ture death”

“if I do made
the sacrifice he urges, I'l throw al on the altar—heart, vitals,
the entife victims.’’@Jane said to St John

“I scom your idea 0f
love”. Jane dared to rebel against St John S ofer because she
thought they were equa1.She had the right to rebel against him.
Since St John only loved God,getting ready to devote his everything
even life to religion,he WaSh t worth being loved by Jane.
In Jane S eyes,St John COuld live as a tol to serve God.Jane s
rebe llious wil was to finn, St John S every efort couldn t
change her idea.Jan e knew if she agreed with St John ,she was
also a to l to se rve him. Happiness and indepe ndence wouldn t
belong to her any longer. She wouldn t get true love forever, she
must do wha t she wanted to do. She wouldn t be tray her wil1.
Her sincere love for Rochester finally cause d her to go back to
Thomfield.
Influenced by psychic experience, Jane seemed to hear
Rochester s supe rnatural cal1. Her spirit felt victorious over her
body, so Jane revisited Th ornfield.Surprisingly,Everything at
Thomfield cha nged: the hall lied in ruins. Th omfield was destroyed
in a big fire. It was Rochester s lunatic wife who set fire
to the Hal1. Rochester was the last to leave the burning Hal1.
Unfortunately, when Rochester tried to save hi s mad wife, he was
injured badly. Now,his wife was dead, he was blind in both
eyes an d crippled by losing an a咖. He was n t the rich man as
be fore. He ha d already lost all his prope rty. At this moment, in
common people s eyes, it was not proper for Jan e to marry
Rochester.What s more,Jane was now rich.Her Uncle John in
Madeira had died and left her inheritance. However, in spite of
common barriers,Jane married Rochester. She told Rochester she
would be his neighbor, his nurse, his house keeper, she didn t
think Rochester was ruin, lighting—struck tree. Nothing could
stop her. To be Rochester s wife was happy as she could be on
the earth.Jan e got true love,freedom and independence.Just as
she said. “I hold myself supremely blest— — blest beyond what
language can express; because I am my husband s life as fully as
he is mine. No woman was ever nearer to her mate than I am :
ever m0re absolute1v bone 0f his bone. and fh sh of his fresh.’’@
Jane s special character ran thmugh the whole n0ve1. In
this n0vel, Jane was p0rtIlayed’a rebelli0us f male who always
struggled with the unf_air s0ciety fbr human dignity, indepen—
dence, fl陀ed0m and true l0ve, At anv time, Jane was self.
kn0wledPIeable, h0nest and cauti0us. As l0ng as s0me0ne insulled
and trampled up0n her hu眦n dignity, she w0uld make Vici0us
and ruthless reprisals. Jane 0nlv l0ved th0se wh0 l0ved her and
struck back at th0se wh0 struck her. Jane looked t00 weak to
wiIhstand a lst of wind, while she was strong, faithful and

brave. In the face of any dim culties. she never escaped but
faced them courageously.Jane would rather starve to death than
be Rochester s mistress, Jane broke through all handicaps and
married Roc hester. Her moral strength caused Mr. Roc hester to
lean finally on her in every emergency, an d Roc hester felt he
coul d not leave her. Her generous nature revealed itself in her
added love far Adele when she heard about her background.
Jane s compassion an d willingness to forgive offered Mrs.Reed a
chan ce at reconciliation;Jan e s g0od reason ma de her self—con—
trol, even under the almost hypnotic spell of St John s religious
fervor.Jan e s emotion was natural,rich,enthusiastic,like fire.
St John s strength of“ice”couldn t change the“fire”of Jane s na—
ture. Generally speaking,Jan e s spirit, strong in her first en—
counter of the book, rema ined strong throughout the book.
On one han d,Jane had lots of good characters,on the oth—
er hand, she had some weak characters. Firsdy, Jan e appreci—
ated individual struggle. regarding individual happy life as her
life aim. She could not find the final way to settle down social
problems.Laboring people in that unfair society sufered oppres—
sion and exploitation from the ruling class. Jan e realized the
cause of oppression an d exploitation was that capitalists own ed
wealth , laboring pe ople had no economic indepe ndence. Howev—
er, Jane didn t ofered a thorough way to solve laboring pe ople s
poverty. She thought inheritance was a good way to solve pover—
ty. For instance. the orphan school was a man world s hell where
children were cruely treated an d kilied, but Jan e publicized the
orphan scho l could be improved with the help of the rich.Jane
attacked the hypocrisy of the religion, but she idealized St John,
who under the beauty lied coldness, selfishness, dishonesty and
inhumanity.Though Jane refused to ma rry him, yet she always
appreciated his strong spirit to devote himself to religion. It was
impossible for Jane to realize what St John did was really a kind
of spiritual invasion for colonial people.Jane criticized unequal—
ness be tween the sexes, advocating freedom of marriage, simulta—
neously, preaching individual struggle. All these were the weak—
ness of Jane s character, which revealed by the author,Charlotte
Bronte, as a daughter of a clergyman, had her class limitations.
Jane s revolt was a petty bourgeoisie s revolt. For the sake of in—
